What is an Orderly?

An Orderly, also known as a nurse's aide, is someone who helps medical staff take care of patients. This can mean anything from moving patients to bathing them to serving meals and handing out medications.

Orderlies usually work in hospitals, assisted living facilities, or other settings where patients live in the facility. Orderlies who work in settings like mental health facilities may also be responsible for acting as security on the ward to ensure the safety of the patients and the rest of the staff.

Because of the nature of the job, orderlies often work “shift work,” which can include nights and weekends. An Orderly earns an average of between $20,000 and $30,000 annually.

How do I become an Orderly?

You can become an Orderly by getting a quick healthcare degree in a nursing aides' program. In this program, you'll learn how to care for patients, how to safely lift and move them, as well as medical terminology and other health information you need to know for the work.

You may have certain licensing requirements based on where you live and work, so it's important to find out exactly what you'll need to do before you enroll in a program.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of a career as an Orderly?

One of the benefits of a career as an Orderly is that you work directly with patients. In helping to take care of their daily needs, you can get to know patients well, and even form friendships with them. For people who want to go into the healthcare field to work with people, this can be a great opportunity.

One of the drawbacks of a career as an Orderly is that while you do work with patients, your work is limited to things that do not involve any risk to the patient. That is, you aren't responsible for treatments, diagnoses, or anything impacting the health of the patient. Your role is more focused on their daily needs and comforts. If you want to get into the healthcare field to make a difference and help people get healthy, getting a quick healthcare degree as an Orderly may work better as a stepping-stone for you.
