What is a Medical Transcriptionist?

A Medical Transcriptionist is a healthcare worker trained to transcribe auditory notes from doctors and nurses to written notes to be included in patients' files.

Medical transcription is generally a flexible position. While many Medical Transcriptionists work full time in offices or at hospitals, there are also many who work predominantly from home and make their own hours. The emphasis for this job is on the results: the transcribed notes. Often, as long as deadlines are met and the work is done correctly, employers are accommodating.

The average compensation for a Medical Transcriptionist is between $25,000 and $35,000 annually.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of this career?

One major benefit of working as a medical transcriptionist is the lingo you learn. By transcribing notes, you will learn medical terms and procedures, better understand tests and treatments, and familiarize yourself with the language of the healthcare field. This can be particularly beneficial if you plan to continue your education in healthcare.

One drawback of working as a medical transcriptionist is that you don't work directly with patients. You will work with healthcare professionals, but your work is behind the scenes. Because of this, it may not be the best career if you're trying something out to see if you're interested in a long-term career in healthcare.

How can I become a Medical Transcriptionist?

To begin working as a Medical Transcriptionist, you would have to complete a one-year program or earn an Associate's degree. Many schools offer one-year programs, with some of them offering online courses for you to earn your quick healthcare degree in medical transcription.

The focus of this training is typing, and a knowledge of medical jargon to ensure that the transcriptions are typed correctly and with correct spellings.

After going through the initial program, you have the option for further training to become a Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) or Certified Medical Transcriptionist, but these titles are not necessary to work in the field.
