What are the benefits and drawbacks of a career as a Dental Hygienist? |
One benefit of a career as a Dental Hygienist is that you work directly with patients, even performing some procedures, without the long process of becoming a dentist. A dentist goes to school for eight years (four years as an undergraduate and four years in dental school) before being able to practice, while a Dental Hygienist can be ready to work in an office with a certification rather than a full degree.
One drawback of a career as a Dental Hygienist is that there isn't a lot of room for advancement without further education. Working as Dental Hygienist isn't a stepping stone to another career unless you want to go to dental school to become a dentist. So while it may take only a quick healthcare degree to become a Dental Hygienist, the career is long-term unless you're willing to spend time to go back to school.

To earn your quick healthcare degree in dental hygiene, you have to graduate from an accredited dental hygiene school. Most commonly, people earn associate's degrees, but you can also become a dental hygienist with as little as a certificate, or as much as a bachelor's or even a master's degree. You're also required to get licensed in your state by passing a written and clinical exam.
