Standards and Criteria Used for CCNE Accreditation

Choosing a CCNE accredited program for your nursing degree means you can be sure that the education you receive is one that is high quality, will teach you what you need to know to be a successful nurse, and will let your potential employers know you can be an asset to their medical team.

Why have standards for CCNE accreditation?

It may seem unnecessary for nursing programs to “jump through hoops” for accreditation, but ultimately, it's for the benefit of the students who earn their degrees through those programs. When you put time, effort, and money into earning your nursing degree, you want to be sure you're getting a good education. Creating standards for accreditation means that programs are evaluated as objectively as possible, and that if a specific program is CCNE accredited, you know it meets a certain level of education set down by an outside organization.

How are different degree programs evaluated differently?

Though the CCNE has one set of criteria it uses to evaluate nursing programs, it addresses all levels of education from Bachelors degrees through Graduate and Post-Graduate degrees. The same basic set of criteria is used for all programs, but the different “levels” of education are addressed within the standards. That is, there's a category for Bachelors degrees, a category for Masters degrees, as well as other degrees. Because of this, the same criteria is used for all programs, but each program is evaluated based on what it offers the students.

What happens when medical practices and standards change?

The CCNE is currently using Standards for Accreditation of Baccalaureate and Graduate Degree Nursing Programs, which was amended in April 2009 and put into effect in January 2010. This may seem like the CCNE is using “old” standards to evaluate programs, but as medical practices and standards change, the CCNE looks at its standards and criteria to make sure that it matches what is expected of nurses once they graduate and get their licenses. The same is said for educational policies and practices. As colleges adopt certain requirements, the CCNE makes sure that the academic aspect of their accreditation standards meet the needs of the students. In this way, the CCNE is able to keep up with any changes that are made in medical or academic circles so that the students who graduate from CCNE accredited programs don't fall behind.

CCNE accreditation is meant to keep nursing programs “on the same page” as they educate students. Not only does this make sure that medical and academic standards are met on a basic level, but it means that if you enroll in a CCNE accredited program, you can be sure that the program is held to the same high standards as other colleges' programs. That way, when you finally get your diploma and license and start your career as a nurse, you'll be ready for whatever comes your way.
