What is an Emergency Medical Technician?

An Emergency Medical Technician, also called an EMT, is someone who is a first-responder for accidents and emergencies. They work through hospitals, police stations, and fire departments to provide help to people injured in car accidents, fires, and other emergencies. They can also be employed by ambulance services independent from a hospital.

It's important to note that there is a difference between an Emergency Medical Technician and a paramedic. A paramedic is someone who may have gotten a quick healthcare degree as an Emergency Medical Technician, but then continued training to become certified as a paramedic. All paramedics are Emergency Medical Technicians, but not all Emergency Medical Technicians are paramedics.

The average income of an Emergency Medical Technician is between $25,000 and $40,000 annually.

How do I become an Emergency Medical Technician?

The quick healthcare degree needed to become an Emergency Medical Technician is often offered at hospitals, local community colleges, vocational or technical schools, or through ambulance services. The program usually takes no more than two years, depending on the level of certification you want. If you want to be an EMT-Basic, for example, your training will take less time than if you want to become an EMT-Paramedic.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of a career as an Emergency Medical Technician?

One of the benefits of a career as an Emergency Medical Technician is that there is room for advancement with further training and education. If you get certified as an EMT-Basic, you can continue your education to become an EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic. The further training allows you to be more involved at the scene, and may open more opportunities for jobs, as well. The training to become an EMT-Basic is a quick healthcare degree, so you can get into the field right away, and then move up from there.

One of the drawbacks of a career as an Emergency Medical Technician is that the work can be emotionally difficult. Because you are a first-responder, you see many people in pain, with injuries that range from minor to severe, and even people who may not be able to be saved. This can be hard for some people to deal with on a daily basis. If you have trouble dealing with bad news, a career as an Emergency Medical Technician may not be your best choice.
