What is an Anesthesia Technician?

An Anesthesia Technician is someone who assists anesthesiologists and doctors to administer anesthesia by preparing supplies, monitoring patients, and maintaining equipment. Generally, Anesthesia Technicians work in hospital settings, usually in operating rooms or emergency rooms. However, they can also work in clinics and other medical facilities where anesthesia is used.

Programs for certification as an Anesthesia Technician are not as common as some other quick healthcare degree programs, but they are available. The coursework in the programs covers medical terminology, anesthesia theory, advanced life support, and medical calculations, among other things.

An Anesthesia Technician earns an average of between $30,000 and $40,000 annually.

How do I become an Anesthesia Technician?

Education requirements for a career as an Anesthesia Technician vary by state and employer. In some areas, you may need a two-year degree, while some employers may only require a high school diploma or GED and offer on-the-job training. What are the benefits and drawbacks of a career as an Anesthesia Technician?

One benefit of a career as an Anesthesia Technician is the direct work you do with patients, as well as with anesthesiologists and physicians. Since you're directly involved in taking care of the patient during surgery, your experience is hands-on. This can be especially helpful if you're considering moving on to another healthcare career, such as a nurse, or an anesthesiologist. You'll know what is expected in these positions, as well as picking up on a lot of great medical information and terminology as you do your work.

One drawback of a career as an Anesthesia Technician is that, in order to advance, further education or training is needed. You can move up to a Certified Anesthesia Technician or a Certified Anesthesia Technologist within the field, but certification for those specific careers is needed.
